Bourj al-Barajneh refugee camp is located in the southern suburbs of Beirut, close to to Shatila refugee camp. Like Shatila, it lacks many vital services available in other parts of the city, resulting in poor social and economic conditions. The population of the camp increased sharply as a result of the influx of refugees from Syria, creating a greater strain on the already sparse resources.
Basmeh and Zeitooneh set up a community center there shortly after its establishment of the pilot center in Shatila. The approach of the project was the same: to build the capacity of the community, whether from the host or refugee population, through needs-led relief and development programs, targeting the most vulnerable families. We are now looking to expand the range of services in this center, in order to reach out to a larger number of individuals and families, and enhance resilience in a vulnerable neighbourhood.
